5 Tips to improve wellbeing when away on business

Being away on business is a chore that many of us endure from time to time.  You may have a role where a corporate trip is a very regular occurrence or just an odd night away here and there for events and meetings.  Either way, hotel rooms can often be stuffy and impersonal.   How can you make staying away for business better for your wellbeing? Here are our top 5 tips…

  1. Stay in a self-catering cottage, cabin or apartment. Enjoy the home from home experience and be able to really relax. Grab a fresh morning coffee or juice in your PJ’s and catch up on emails from the comfort of your balcony.  If staying with colleagues, you will be able to enjoy each other’s company in a less formal setting.
  2. There was a recent study https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/sea-boost-mental-health that suggested just having a sea view improved a person’s mental wellbeing. With such a mass of coastline around the UK it is quite easy to find a hotel alternative that would help tick this box.

  1. Stress is often high when traveling for business. Choose an out of town area for a meeting to avoid congestion and parking issues for your meeting.
  2. Eat well – self-catering means you can take your own healthy meals or purchase something fresh and local ready to eat or to prepare yourself. A self-catering cottage will usually have a welcome hamper of tasty local produce to start you off.  Freshly baked bread and a dollop of local honey can be delicious.

With mental health issues affecting one in six British workers each year* there had never been a better time to improve wellbeing when away from business.  There are many activities that can help reduce the stress of being away from home.  Remember to prepare well and take some time in advance to see where you could spend some time getting away from the norm.  There could be a famous local restaurant to eat at, a world-famous museum to visit or get back to nature and take off your shoes for a refreshing walk with the wind in your hair along the beach….
